PHILOSOPHIES

LIVE BEYOND DEFINITION
Guiding Principles to Living Without Limits

HIGHLY UNLIKELY does NOT mean IMPOSSIBLE!

Adopting a different perspective can also be helpful in overcoming the obstacles that will inevitably present themselves en route to achieving your goals. You must be able to step back and come at the perceived problem from away. This allows you to see potential solutions that you would most likely not have seen otherwise. Imagine a typical beach ball. If you and a group of people are sitting in a circle with the beach ball in the middle, when looking at it from anyone’s position, each person can see only three of the coloured sections on the ball at any one time, no matter where each person is sitting. However, if you come from away and switch seats with someone else to see the ball from another perspective, you will be able to see three different coloured sections of the ball. Imagine if the solution to your problem was written on one of the sections that you couldn’t see from your original vantage point! You may have even been close to the solution—only one section away—but without a slight shift in perspective, you would not have been able to see it. This goes to show that being able to step back and see problems or setbacks from a different point of view — to come from away — is often crucially important to overcoming obstacles, achieving your goals, and, ultimately, reaching your highest level of success.

YET Mindset

The ‘YET’ mindset, in simple terms, turns a negative thought or comment into one that is optimistic and aspirational. This is done simply by adding the word ‘YET’ to the end of those negative thoughts or comments, leaving the possibility for improvement in the future – that the state of the situation as is, is not how it will necessarily remain. For example, fill in the blanks: “I can’t _________.” Versus “I can’t _________. YET!” Note: The ‘YET’ mindset came out of work done by Carol Dweck – a professor at Stanford University and the author of Mindset, a classic work on motivation and “growth mindset.” According to her, the power of “not yet” helps people see the possibilities of their future as it makes them feel that they are on a learning curve rather than at a dead end.

You will achieve your goals when they become more important than your excuses are powerful.

No Regrets = No Excuses

To look back on your journey — including all the choices you’ve made along the way — and, regardless of the outcome, have no regrets.

Having no regrets means having no excuses! It means being able to look back at every choice you made, every action you took, every word you spoke, and know that you did everything you could to be the best you could be when it mattered most. By living up to your full potential, or at least trying your best to, you will be far less likely to have regrets than if you settle for mediocrity, the easy path, or don’t push past the obstacles and excuses that stand in the way of achieving your big goals. Every choice I made en route to the Olympics was with my final goal in mind. No excuses. No regrets. Peace of mind.

Remember…
Everyone you now look up to started as a rookie.
So embrace being a rookie – it’s the first step in becoming exceptional.
