THE HUMANITARIAN
CARING FOR THE COMMUNITY
Helping make the world a better place
Heather will, literally, climb mountains for the things that are important to her.
Heather has a strong connection to the community, and is involved in many charitable organizations. She uses her personal experience – and professional training as an occupational therapist – to encourage and inspire others to embrace challenges and face adversity head-on, to believe in the possibilities of achieving their dreams, and to step outside of their comfort zones to discover and maximize their potential whether in sport, business, or life.
Because of her passion and outstanding involvement in community, among other honours, Heather has received the inaugural Randy Starkman Olympian Humanitarian Award, the Queen’s Jubilee Medal, and the Order of PEI – the highest honour to be bestowed in any province in Canada.
TRUE PATRIOT LOVE FOUNDATION
ANTARCTICA EXPEDITION
To further personally embrace the points above, Heather summited the highest mountain in Antarctica in January 2016 to raise awareness for PTSD and raise money to help veterans and soon-to-be-retired members of the Canadian Armed Forces successfully transition back to civilian life after finishing their time in the Military.
In her words,
“Those selfless people choose to put their lives on the line so that I can live the life I choose to live. I will not waste it.”
CANADA C3 EXPEDITION
LEG 8 – BAFFIN ISLAND
Heather was selected to join one leg of Canada C3 – a signature project for Canada’s 150th anniversary of Confederation in 2017 as a celebratory and transformational expedition for all Canadians. The expedition lasted 150 days and went from Toronto to Victoria via the Northwest Passage. It’s purpose was to inspired a deeper understanding of our land and environment, our peoples and the stories of coastal communities, and our country as a whole, connecting with Canadians from coast to coast to coast.
HOPE SPORTS
ROSARITO, MEXICO
In 2015, Heather joined 18 other Olympic athletes from 10 different Olympic Games from 4 different countries to build a house in Mexico for a family who had never had keys to a house before. It was an empowering experience that prompted Heather to develop some of her own outreach leadership initiatives.
RIGHT TO PLAY
BENIN, WEST AFRICA
Heather joined Right To Play for one of their site visit trips in Benin, West Africa, and witnessed the positive impact that play can have on children. Right To Play empowers 1.9 million children every day. Every day millions of children face poverty, war, disease and poor education. For many of them, the future is limited by barriers like child labor, early marriage, illiteracy and inequality. Right To Play empowers children to rise above these challenges, discover possibilities, and find their way back to hope.
CAMP TRIUMPH
PRINCE EDWARD ISLAND
Heather became involved with Camp Triumph when her brother told her about the story of the family who started it. The purpose and vision of the camp is to acknowledge, support, and provide an opportunity for children and youth – whose families are affected by chronic illness or disability – to build confidence, positive self-esteem, and reach their full potential through nurturing qualities of perseverance, respect, and understanding.
COMMONWEALTH GAMES CANADA
CANADIAN SPORT LEADERSHIP CORPS
In 2001, Heather began a nine-month internship in Trinidad and Tobago as a Disability Sport Program Officer, but ended up staying in Trinidad for an additional two years, adding contracts with the local Rugby Union to develop and coach women’s rugby, and with the local chapter of Disabled People’s International as a consultant.
During her internship, she created Camp A.B.L.E. (Active Bodies, Leadership & Esteem) for teenagers who are deaf or hearing impaired from various Caribbean islands. The camp continues to be run annually by a local committee.
