“You are the average of the five people you spend the most time with.”
“Show me your friends, and I’ll show you your future.”
In the world of high performance, whether in business, sports, or life, success isn’t just about talent or strategy—it’s about energy management.
You can have the best mindset and work ethic, but if you’re constantly surrounded by people who drain you, your performance will suffer.
The people around you are either fueling your energy or draining it.
I call these people energy givers and energy takers:
🔹 Energy Givers inspire, support, and challenge you to be better. Their presence lifts you up. You leave interactions with them feeling motivated and capable.
🔹 Energy Takers drain your enthusiasm, instill doubt, and leave you exhausted. Their negativity is like an anchor on your progress.
Science even backs this up. Emotions and energy levels are contagious. Research in neuroscience shows that our brains have mirror neurons, which cause us to subconsciously absorb and reflect the emotions of those around us.
If you surround yourself with ambitious, optimistic people, you’ll naturally feel more driven. If you’re constantly around stress and negativity, your own energy will suffer.
In high performance, time management is important—but energy management is critical. If you’re constantly depleted by the people around you, how can you show up as your best self?
⏸️ Pause and reflect: Who’s in your circle? Are they fueling your growth or holding you back?
👉 Your challenge: Choose wisely. Seek out more energy givers. Be an energy giver for others. Protect your energy like it’s your greatest asset—because it is.
